I have intended to get the Pre-Bass one but never got around to it and I really prefer a Jazz Bass anyway. If the Pre-Bass is anything close to the Jay-Bass, it is worth every penny!!! BTW, I do play bass myself so mostly I use a Fender Jazz Fretless Modified bass (looks like Jaco Pastorius's) running thru GK Amplification Pro or Mark Studio 2 and play the part in myself. I have a bass guitar, but truth be told, I'm a pretty poor player. :) I can pluck out some basic stuff (albeit only with a pick my finger picking is dreadfully sloppy) but some of the bass lines I write are too difficult for me to play. I have been using Cakewalk's virtual bass instrument and it's alright, although I do struggle with getting it to sound more realistic and getting it to cut through the mix. Even with trying out different samples/settings and EQ, it just doesn't quite cut the cake which is why I'm very interested in the Scarbee stuff. I typically do guitar-centric rock and some country-style music, so I was thinking that the Pre-Bass might be a good all-arounder. So I just checked out a fairly detailed tutorial/review of the Rickenbacker bass on YouTube.oh man, that thing looks pretty killer. Kind of bummer that it only uses samples played with a pick - would be nice to have picked and fingered options - but it looks incredibly versatile and I imagine I can probably get just about any sound I want out of it. (And to be honest, who knows if I'd even be able to tell the difference between fingered/picked in a mix. I'm only interested in the fingered option simply because most bass players I see don't use a pick. But what do I know?!) I do like the option of using the amp/cab modeling within Scarbee or just using the DI samples and running them through another amp sim. And the articulations really drive the authenticity. There's no substitute for a real bass player of course, but for a bum like me, I know this virtual instrument would sound a heckuva lot better than anything I could plunk out on my bass.

:) So yeah, I guess I'm now leaning towards the Rickenbacker instead of the Pre Bass. Totally blown away by that video.Native Instruments has announced the release of Scarbee Jay-Bass, a new Kontakt Player powered virtual bass instrument for PC and Mac. SCARBEE JAY-BASS is the go-to source for slap and finger bass. This addition to the “powered by KONTAKT” range of instruments is an expertly played and sampled late 70s Fender® Jazz bass.Ĭreated by Thomas Skarbye.

Based on the Scarbee Red Bass, it makes extensive use of the advanced scripting features introduced with the SCARBEE PRE-BASS.

With three pick-up positions and a multitude of playing techniques, SCARBEE JAY-BASS has it all when it comes to slapped and fingered bass sounds. Playable in real time – with the exception of cross hammering and trills all of the articulations in the list given further below can be triggered without the need for any keyswitches.
